Most companies have the core functionality of an ERP System. These business tools are necessary to keep a company organized. But many companies still have outdated or disjointed software. Why is this a problem? One of the most common issues cause by such systems is double or triple data-entry. Simply put, when several different software utilities (that do not integrate with one another) are utilized, the users must entry the same or simliar data into each system. This might not seem like a huge problem, but it can seriously effect employee efficiency. Also if someone forgets to enter data into one of the systems data can be lost which can cause a company to lose revenue.
One of the advantages of a consolidating ERP functionality is less data entry, but well designed system goes beyond this. While some companies struggle to understand their costs, revenue and efficiency with Excel spreadsheets and other archic methods, ERP systems provide business intelligence so that decision makers have the appropriate information to steer their company in the right direction. Just having this information is a huge step forward for technologically challenged businesses, but improving the software to meet continuous improvement plans is the next step. Flexible software is not only easily implemented, it allows for adaptation based on the company's needs.
Going beyond the promise of no extraneous screens, fields, reports, menus, and providing user-defined functionality, tailored ERP allows you to innovate. While most ERP software can only level the playing field against your competition, Agile ERP Systems can give you the edge. Companies that use the same, generic software can not innovate with such a system and must conform their procedures to meet the software's capabilities. Software that is tailored to your business needs allows for continuous improvement, forming unique standardized practices while also allowing a company to transform inefficient processes to the industry's best practices.
Comparing ERP offerings is important. Enterprise systems are expensive and low quality systems are difficult to implement. A reputable software company should be able to provide different examples of how their software is utilized. Custom solutions providers should have a plan to upgrade or modify the software when needed. Ask pre-packaged software vendors if one can modify the software to allow for a flexible structure and interfaces. One of the reasons that large scale software implementations fail if the lack of flexibility within the system.
